Dr. Scott P. Sells

Dr. Sells is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and former tenured Professor of Social Work at Savannah State University, Savannah, GA.

Dr. Sells has conducted many seminars, in over 100 cities and spoken to over 15,000 professional counselors and parents based on his first book entitled, Treating the Tough Adolescent: A Family-Based, Step-by-Step Guide published in 1998. Dr. Sells' second book, Parenting Your Out-of-Control Teenager: 7 Steps to Reestablish Authority and Reclaim Love (2001), was the basis for the establishment of the evidence based model: Parenting with Love and Limits®.

It took Dr. Sells six years of intensive research to discover what makes children and teens go beyond normal everyday rebellion and move into behaviors that are out of control. He also has discovered how to reach resistant parents and get them motivated and engage their teenager again. The book, Parenting Your Out-of-Control Teenager, is based upon this research and contains the seven critical steps parents need to restore both love and limits with their teenagers.

His dream now is not to reach just the individual counselor or parent but to work collaboratively with juvenile justice and foster care systems in the US, Australia, and Europe to retool the way we serve our youth and motivate their parents. As one child stated to Dr. Sells years ago,
  • "You can lock us up in detention or send us away to treatment centers but you still have not fixed our parents. So when we come back we return to the same home that we left and soon return to our old behaviors. This is crazy."
The Parenting with Love and Limits Model is currently being used in more than fifteen U.S. States and The Netherlands by state agencies, county programs, and private providers to engage parents.

Dr. Sells is the Chief Executive Officer and founder of Parenting with Love and Limits, and has worked with and treated over 1,000 difficult children and teenagers throughout his career. PLL&39;s vision is to help professionals and parents reduce or eliminate severe behavior problems in teenagers and children through a step-by-step road map and the restoration of both love and limits, and as such, PLL&39;s motto is "Helping Organizations Restore Families®."

Dr. Sells and PLL work with Juvenile Justice, Residential Treatment centers, and Foster Care agencies across the United States and abroad to implement his evidence-based Model Program, Parenting with Love and Limits®.

Publications. Dr. Sells' first book, entitled Treating the Tough Adolescent: A Family-Based, Step-by-Step Guide, (Guilford, 1998), was based upon a four year outcome study of 82 difficult teenagers and their families. This book was featured as the alternate main selection in the Behavioral Science Book Club.

Dr. Sells' wrote his second book, entitled Parenting Your Out-of-Control Teenager: 7 Steps to Reestablish Authority and Reclaim Love, (St. Martin®, 2001), because current parenting books and counseling programs often did not address the special circumstances specific to the out-of-control teenager. This book is based upon a four year research study and contains the seven critical steps parents need to restore both love and limits with their teenagers.

In addition to these two books, Dr. Sells has had over a dozen major publications in preferred journals, plus a book chapter in the Handbook of Family Therapy Research Methods (Guilford, 1996).
